they took the bait
if only I had put a tracking device inside!
when we moved to this house about 3 years ago, my dad gave me his old lawnmower. it was the heaviest mower I had ever encountered. I think the deck was cast iron or something. and it had a funky custom-built aluminum chute to redirect the grass clippings away from your shins. it didnt run well, but being a honda, we had hopes of getting it going. alas, I calculated the cost of getting it fixed was about the same as that of getting a new one.
so when we got the new one not long ago (thanks dad), the old one was evicted from the shed and left out in the yard. and then we get this rash of thefts in the neighborhood, so we were a little worried about the contents of our shed, and at the same time I was hoping that they'd take the old one.
yesterday we realized that they did indeed take the bait. I'm sure the thieves didnt realize the mower was for crap, but I bet they figured out quickly that it's rather heavy. they probably didnt know they were doing me a favor. and hopefully they're satisfied that they've relieved us of all valuable mowing equipment.

Bob, it's cool that they got rid of your unwanted lawn mower for you, but you should report the theft to the police if you have not already done so.
Bob,
This is one of the better blogs I've read concerning crime in St. Elmo and whatnot. I've known people - or at least one person with a family - who had good ideas about community and was committed at one point to stick it out there. However, he eventually caved and left entirely. I cannot blame him. I walked down to his house one bright sunny afternoon (when he still lived there) and have to say that I did not feel safe.
Anyway, my point here is that I guess it's good to find out that one doesn't have to cave and can find humor. I wouldn't hold your breath about the police though. I work with a former policeman. If he speaks for the rest of them then, my take is that they are quick to write St. Elmo off.
well I'm sure my tone would change if they took something of value. in our 3 years at this house, we've only had useless items taken. and there's still a bike out there that we dont really want if they come back.
so it's easy to have a good attitude in this position. but I AM mad that they have stolen valuable items from my friends and neighbors. I chalk it up to God's mysterious graciousness to us, which we dont deserve any more than anyone else. maybe tomorrow that will change? either way I know we are and will be taken care of.
