baby catechism book - initial concepts
so we're running with this idea of making a catechism board book. here are some initial mock-ups of what the pages may look like:

we may not do quite everything ourselves as far as the construction of the book goes, as there are other options, like covering up an old book, or buying a blank board book. so far the idea is to make the pages as 4"x6" images, and just print those at Sams or wherever. then glue them onto the book, cover with contact paper, and viola. we'll see if this works.
I want to use our own pictures as much as possible, but I may borrow some from the internet at large too. some of the concepts arent easy to illustrate, like "For his own glory" so we'll have to get creative, but try not to cross the line into inappropriate. if anyone has any ideas for illustrating some of these concepts, please do share. here are the first 10 questions that we're planning on using:
Q. 1. Who made you?
A. God.
Q. 2. What else did God make?
A. God made all things.
Q. 3. Why did God make you and all things?
A. For his own glory.
Q. 4. How can you glorify God?
A. By loving him and doing what he commands.
Q. 5. Why ought you to glorify God?
A. Because he made me and takes care of me.
Q. 6. Are there more gods than one?
A. There is only one God.
Q. 7. In how many persons does this one God exist?
A. In three persons.
Q. 8. What are they?
A. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.
Q. 9. What is God?
A. God is a Spirit, and has not a body like men.
Q. 10. Where is God?
A. God is everywhere.
if anyone wants to share any ideas for this little project, feel free. Michelle also wants to do a family book, and she's planning on doing a "quiet" felt book too.

I love this idea.
What software are you using to create these mockups?
we're using photoshop. I'll be happy to share the original files with anyone who wants them, so you could drop in your own pictures if you want. I've decided to do a 5x5 book, so I'm going to have them printed as 5x7s and trim the extra. so far I have the first 2 pages done. and I found a great place for blank books at www.barebooks.com. only $1 each!
www.barebooks.com - nice find!
let me know if you want to go in on an order together to save shipping.
Great idea, Bob! One thing I'd suggest instead of making it like 'regular' books instead you put the pages on small rings of some sort (like the ones used in three ring binders, sorta) so they can be turned easily and often. With the ages of your kids you need the most kid friendly book possible. The more pages are turned or folded back the more likely they are to wear out quickly and this book will probably become one of your kids favorites because you made it so you'll want to be sure it can stand all that lovin' it's gonna get.
Have you heard of Judy Rogers? We have her "Why Can't I See God?" cd that has 20 songs based on the Westminster Children's and Shorter Catechisms. The music grates on my nerves sometimes cause it's so cheesy, but the lyrical content is so big I think it's worth it. I'm dyin' for some really cool musical renditions of the catechism content, along the lines of TMBG's "Here Come the ABCs". Can you talk to Bill Mallonee for me?
I havent heard of her yet, but that sounds cool. maybe we can set her lyrics to better tunes? maybe "Spikenard" (our little church music band) can do some recordings for ya.
We had the 'why can't I see God?" tape when we were kids. Don't really remember much of it, though. It used to annoy me when I was a kid that it wasn't word for word from the catechism, though. :-)
You're going to have to let us know how all this works out, because I'd love to make one for Ellis, too!
Have you thought about how you're going to depict God and the Trinity? I thought you could do God the Son as a Lamb and the Holy Spirit as a dove, since they show up like that in Bible, but "God is spirit..."? that's going to be tough to depict. hmm.
good ideas for the Trinity. so far we were thinking of just doing a triangle with the names "Father, Son, Holy Spirit" at each corner. I like your idea tho, so maybe we'll incorporate it.
and for the "God is spirit" we were thinking of doing a "no" sign (like "no smoking") through a "body" for the "has not a body like men." only a little silly?
Don't know if this has come up yet, but I think you all should host a board-book-making night! FUN!!
very cool idea. once we figure out some good methods, we'll definitely have to do that. speaking of, Dave has suggested using spray adhesive, which should make for a good stick for stuff.
