esophageal dilation
I am eating my usual lunch (lunchmeat and cheese on homemade whole wheat, topped with garden veggies) wondering if this might be the last time I have to try to force the food down with lots of water. could this be the last time I have to worry about the food getting stuck about halfway down?
I've had this problem for at least 10 years, but I've learned to live with it. it's not usually a big deal, but now and then something will get stuck. people tend to freak out, because they think I'm choking, but it's well past the airway intersection. all it does is make me uncomfortable and prevent me from eating or drinking anything else until I can force it down or bring it back up. on average, I think it causes such an issue maybe once a month, but I've always got to be careful.
so tomorrow I'm going in for an esophageal dilation. hopefully it'll do the trick, and I will no longer fear apples, steak, chicken or bread.

Methinks blending all your food might help. There's nothing like a big, hearty meatshake.
ooh yummy. well if this doesnt work I may have to give that a shot.
Ah...the Meatshake. Ugly Duckling fan?
Meat and shake, that's all I need, mmm-hmmmm.
I thought I was only one who bought that album.
You were. I just Googled them. Heh. ;)
My daugther's probably going to have that done!
interesting...is that an invasive procedure? what exactly takes place? i guess i could research it myself, but i'm figuring you know better than anyone. here's to hoping it goes well and brings you much good swallowing in the future.
as far as I know, they'll be going down my throat with a scope (to take a look-see) and then a balloon of some sort, which they'll inflate in order to make my throat wider. from all reports of other folks who have had it done, it works quite well.
oh and I'll have to be put under for it. joy.
dude, it's like angioplasty for your throat? does that give good long-term results? that's crazy. if you don't mind telling, what is building up in the throat to cause this to happen?
with heart disease, it's fat and cholesterol in the arteries. they use a balloon to push that against the artery walls and let blood flow through.
what is keeping the food flow from going through? medicine is so weird. but don't worry, God is good. just look at the asher blog for proof.
yup. I dont think it's a "build up" like gunk in the arteries. but I ususally think it's genetic, and apparently it does the trick. my uncle had a polyp in his that they snipped, so they'll check to make sure it's not some obstruction.
hmmmm...interesting.
thanks for the replies.
I know several people who have dealt with this issue. I can remember my grandmother getting up during mealtime and walking around the house until the lodged food passed. It's a pain to deal with... Hopefully the procedure will do the trick for you!
