Dreft - one big scam?

Somewhat like planning a wedding, when having a baby you have to make all these little decisions no matter how laid back you want to be about it. Well we have found the Baby Bargains book, by Denise and Alan Fields, to be very helpful. They have a chapter on money wasters and they list special detergent for babies (Dreft and others) as a major waster. So this got me thinking and I'm pretty sure I agree with them on this one.

They give some good tips on washing as well. They say to always use gentle cycle to lessen wear and tear as well as to turn the clothes inside out so as to keep from pilling and fuzzing. They also say its good to do a second rinse to be sure that all the soap has been rinsed out of the clothes.

So what do you moms and dads out there in blogland do to wash your little tyke's clothes? Have you bought into the special baby soap? Do you have any other little pointers for washing baby clothes? I've decided to not buy into the Dreft scam and to continue using the soap I always have. (All free and clear) Its cheaper and then I can mix some of my clothes in with our babies and not worry about the special detergent. Though with diaper blow-outs and baby spit up maybe I won't want to mix our clothes in? Guess I'll learn as I go.

yay! Welcome to blogging, M!

Wow. I never even knew they had different detergent for babies. Guess you can see where I am not thinking. ;)

We use the same detergent for Gid's as for everything. I (Andy does the diaper wash a lot but as a rule we keep him away from anything "delicate") always wash Gid's clothes on delicate and rinse a second time. Gotta say, I don't take the time to turn them inside out. I always wash my delicate with his (unless they're extra nasty), especially now that I'm in maternity clothes which as you know are almost all delicate. I'm glad to hear from you! I've been thinking about you and Bob a lot the last few months.

Emily and I fold each article of Casey's clothing into the shape of a five point star and wash everything gently by hand. We use the glandular secretion of the South African Nik-Nik plant. As a matter of fact, her clothing is so delicate, it can't withstand her actually wearing it, so we let her run around in only a diaper.

I will probably do what Lynn does. But, that's not why I am posting a comment. I thought you might find this link interesting: http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,595069785,00.html
And the link inside the article is fun to browse as well.

Sorry Michelle, I just realized YOU posted this entry! Hi there! The links are mainly for Bob though.

cool. I like the ugly doll. and we did indeed get a tall stroller. I'm glad michelle is into cutesy baby stuff about as much as I am (which is very little), so I dont have to worry about being "cool." plus I think being a dad is cool enough no matter how pink and flowery your baby junk.

Steve I know you are just avoiding having to say that you guys actually DO use Dreft. I have the inside scoop on you!

Posted by: michelle at June 15, 2004 04:11 PM

Actually, yes... We DO use Dreft... We were suckered by the cutsy baby face on the bottle. I'm not being sarcastic, we really DO use Dreft.

out of curiousity, which tall stroller did you all buy? i'm finding that tall strollers are hard to come by.

we're getting the combi savona

it's nearly impossible to find in stores, but my mom got it online. we're a little nervous buying it sight-unseen, but all the reviews were stellar. we actually get it this saturday!

oh, and it's "yall" not "you all" :-)

can you sense the midwestern influence?? oh the shame... i grew up in the south! ; )

Gideon's clothes usually get washed with ours now. He only wears them for 4 months anyways. Plus, his underwear doesn't fit me.

Hi Michelle, I got here from Jeanette's blog. We're expecting our first any time now, and I too have REALLY appreciated _Baby Bargains_. On the wash, gentle cycle with other gentle cycle stuff (except if it is particularly nasty) with normal detergent, just less of it.

Okay, so maybe Andy's comment explains a bit of the shrinking problem we've been having with some of Gid's shorts. Those things aren't easy to pull over a clothe diaper! And, for the record, I'll vouch for the whole underwear comment.
