neil postman is gone
On my way into work today, NPR told me that Neil Postman has died of cancer. He's the author of Amusing Ourselves to Death, a great book about the effects of TV on our society. I read this book my freshman year, and it changed my life, at least for a while.
Now I'm feeling guilty that, after seven years without, I've got a TV again, and extended cable no less! At least I've got good excuses to have it. Now back to Trading Spaces, and go Marlins!

That's really sad. He also wrote "Technopoly", which I think is a landmark work on the side of those less enthused about technological achievement (though not a neo-luddite or extremist like that).
Also found this cool like to all Postman's writings on the web:

bob weigers has a television? wonders never cease...
i'm quite saddened to hear about postman's death too. his writings were central to my SIP at covenant, not to mention my whole approach to mass communications. well, at least we know he didn't amuse himself to death...
Didn't know Postman had died. I had always hoped he would write a 2nd editon of Technopoly addressing the web. First edition was published in 1992--the words "Internet" or "World Wide Web" don't even appear in the index. Would have loved to gotten his take on all the technology we take for granted like email, web sites and blogging that create means of transmitting and absorbing communication unknown to human culture just 10-15 years ago. Anybody know of Postman writing on these issues?
